I’m writing you today with an urgent request: we need your help to fund this year’s WALC program in Guatemala.

Our partners at CCFC recently received word from a long-term, faithful funder that they couldn’t give their annual commitment for this year’s WALC program. It came as a shock to hear this news, especially so close to the start of the program!

But with your help we can make sure this program continues without interruption!

We are on our way! A group of generous past travelers have already joined together and committed $11,550 to meet this urgent need – and they are inviting you to join them!

The students are scheduled to arrive in November. We need your help to make sure these students can attend the November WALC program and receive their scholarship for school.

80 students — girls like Lilia, Norma, Gloria and Hilda — need your help to attend this life-changing program. Your gift today will equip them with the skills, outlook and financial scholarship they need to stay in school.

I met Hilda for the second time in March. I can’t help but think of her right now. Hilda was a WALC student and after years of studying, through scholarships provided by this very program, Hilda graduated high school and has become an incredible leader with WALC. She’s now leading other young women who have backgrounds very similar to hers.

Each time I visit CCFC I’m honored to observe Hilda and the other young women interacting with each new group of visitors while kindly taking care of all our needs and graciously sharing their stories with us.

But it’s watching Hilda with the younger students and in local villages when I’ve witnessed her true strength. Whether she’s demonstrating proper handwashing technique, or leading a sing-along on the porch, watching Hilda command the attention of a group of pre-teens shows the grit and powerful purpose she possesses.

Hilda (standing) commands the attention of younger students during a handwashing demonstration in a nearby village.

It’s because of Hilda, and all the young women who will follow in her footsteps, that with your help, we are committed to ensuring the WALC program will operate as planned this November.

But we can’t do this without your help!

Yes, I'll help other girls like Hilda

A single WALC scholarship is $275. Can you join the other travelers and help us provide just 80 scholarships this year? 42 of the 80 are already covered by other donors! Your $275 scholarship stretches far! It provides each student with:

  • Food and lodging during the 25 days of WALC;
  • Education on nutrition, cooking, reforestation, agroecology, and life skills;
  • Skills that multiply when girls plant their own parcels; and
  • An invaluable scholarship that allows them to stay in school another year.

Let’s show Hilda and the other leaders and students that we’re committed to their success.

We need your gifts by September 30th so Rob and Tara know how many students they can support this November. Will you join me in supporting Rob, Tara, Hilda, Norma, Lilia, and all the remarkable young Q’eqchi’ Maya women of Alta Verapaz?
